The New iPad 9.7 for 2017
Apple have subtly released a new iPad. Ditching the iPad Air branding, since well “Air” doesn’t mean much when everything else is just as thin. This will probably happen with the Macbook Air too, since the “Pro” and “Macbook” are both just as thin if not thinner than the “Air”, that suffix no longer makes sense.
We are now presented with effectively 3 variations of the iPad, the other 2 being the “Pro” and “Mini”. The”Mini” reducing the size and the “Pro” increasing the performance. Which places this new iPad as the happy medium.
So how does this subtle upgrade of the Air improve over its long over due predeccessor? Well externally nothing, but internally it now has an A9 chip over its older A8x, however even the A9 chip is old in terms of processors, since it launched in 2015 in the iphone 6s.
This refresh could be read two ways. Either Apple has confidence in the existing model and doesn’t believe in change for the sake of change. Or may be more realistically Apple can’t come up with anything in tablet form that could truly revitalize the dwindling sales.
The biggest change to the iPad is its price drop. Now starting at $329 for a 32gb model ( approx £329 in UK), with orders starting from 24th March.
In related news, Apple have also launched a (Product) RED Edition. Every purchase contributes to the Global Fund to support HIV/AIDS programmes and help deliver an AIDS-free generation.
